The Nelson and Marlborough region is well known for offering excellent education, with Nelson-Marlborough students achieving well above the national average. The schools and colleges are public institutions, and offer a wide range of choice from small rural schools to large city schools.
Nelson and Marlborough have a large number of primary schools in the area which cater for children from their 5th birthday.
The 11 secondary schools (Year 9-13) offer high quality education opportunities across the region. There are both co-education and single sex secondary schools, and those that offer homestay and/or boarding accommodation. Each of these secondary schools have their own unique values and educational focuses.
Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) is the region's tertiary education provider, delivering Undergraduate to Postgraduate programmes. NMIT is one of only seven of the country’s 16 institutes of technology and polytechnics (ITPs) to gain the top category 1 rating.
